The current Costa Rican flag was based on a design from 1848. Over many years it has had slight changes on positioning until 1998. The blue colour stands for the sky, opportunities, idealism and perseverance. The white stands for peace, happiness and wisdom. The red colour represents the blood spilt by its people in defense of the country and doubles towards the warmth of the people.

The flag has a white strip on the side with two metal eyelets.
