Adopted in 1982, the Burundi flags colours represent: white for peace, green for the nations hopes in future for development and red for the suffering under Belgian rule. The three stars represent the major ethnic groups of the country and also the three elements of the national motto: Unity, Work and Progress. The stars also represent the pledge to God, King and country by the nations.
